The relationship between anthropomorphism and

humanism in Greece

Introduction

In Greek mythology, gods and humans have the same body and form, also the same hair accessories and clothing. The only differentia between gods and humans is gods have stronger body ,more charming gesture and more gorgeous clothes. Gods also have joy, anger, sorrow and happiness like humans. Humanism is a kind of ideological system which calls for caring for people, loving people and respecting people. Humanism is also a kind of world view which emphasizes people first and human-centered. The image of Prometheus embodies Greek pursuit for humanism.

Prometheus is “human” in “god’s clothing”

Prometheus is god, but he has a bias in favor of human. As god, Prometheus should do what god should do and make himself become a loyal servant of Zeus. But what we see from Prometheus is philanthropic humanity, not divinity. In some ways, we can regard Prometheus as “human” in “god’s clothing”. The “human” may be a kind of abstract expression. "Human nature" of impulse attempts to break through the package of the "god" and it embodies in Prometheus’ confrontation with Zeus and all kinds of help to human. His behavior is also logical to explain some traditional culture of the ancient Greeks. The ancient Greeks is not purely art for art's sake and they pay special attention to ethics. Prometheus use tact to help mankind to solve the problem of offerings’ distribution.
